The Design Story
aati jati zindagiAati Jati ZindagiIn this Manchaha, Laxmi Devi weaves the small scenes that make up her everyday life. Roads leading towards the fort built on top of the mountains, seen from a distance. A simple shed made to protect the goats from the cold at the very top, built with care because animals are part of her family. In the middle is a tree with animals resting beside them, sharing the same land and shade. The rug portrays a scene of an early morning when the village is slowly waking up. For Laxmi Devi, these moments come and go, just like life itself. People pass, days change, work continues. Some people say it is a boring routine, but Laxmi says she thrives in routines. This rug holds the routine of watching life as it arrives and leaves. “Aati Jaati Zindagi,” (Coming and Going of Life) is about noticing the beauty in what seems ordinary, and finding meaning in the quiet flow of everyday life.
