The Design Story
dhalta surajDhalta SurajSantosh Devi has spent decades at the loom. She always takes her surroundings for inspiration. But when she had to start with this rug, she was clueless. When nothing outside gave her the spark of inspiration, she closed her eyes to look inside. The moment she closed her eyes, she says she saw a sunset. The image was so clear that the decision was immediate; this is what she wanted to weave. The rug opens with water, carrying the reflection of the setting sun. At the centre, the sun appears whole, held in balance. Above it, the sky turns orange, marking the last light before night. The composition moves slowly upward, guiding the eye the way evening settles in. Santosh Devi lets the colour shifts and placement do the work. “Dhalta Suraj” “Setting Sun” is a pause in time, shaped by experience. It holds the stillness of a day ending, woven by the hands who know the importance of perseverance, patience, and pause.
