The Design Story
bakhtiari, iran (c.1950)Design Story
An antique Bakhtiari Khersak rug from Persia originates around 1950. It is crafted from hand-knotted wool and represents the Bakhtiari Khersak type, known for a weave that often results in a coarser, somewhat rustic texture, potentially with a thicker pile compared to finer Bakhtiari pieces. The rug possibly utilizes natural, hand-spun wool and traditional dyes characteristic of tribal weavings from this era. Displaying a classic medallion structure, its main field prominently features three large medallions shaped like diamonds. Within these medallions, one finds a mix of decorative elements, incorporating both floral-like designs and square-shaped icons. A vibrant color scheme employing hues of red, orange, blue, and yellow energizes the composition. Encircling the central area are borders that exhibit repeating geometric figures. These border patterns are designed to complement the field, creating an overall impression of visual balance and harmony.
City Story
Bakhtiari tribe rugs from southwestern Iran are hand-knotted and vividly convey diverse narratives. Iconic designs include the Khesti (garden panel) with compartmentalized nature motifs, and medallion-with-corner layouts. Other symbolic patterns like Tree of Life, vase, geometric, and Herati (fish) motifs represent themes of eternity, abundance, interconnectedness, ancestral heritage, and good fortune. These rugs feature a durable wool pile, typically on a cotton foundation, and are made with the Turkish knot, ensuring strength and hard-wearing quality. Their weaving techniques reflect both nomadic and settled traditions. Bakhtiari rugs display a rich, varied, and bold color palette, often using natural dyes, with prominent reds, blues, greens, and yellows enhancing their distinctive character.
