The Design Story
bakhtiari, iran (c.1940)Design Story
An antique Bakhtiari Khersak rug from Persia originates in the year 1940. Traditionally, weavers from the Lor and Qashqai tribes in Persia hand-knot this type of woolen rug. It possesses a characteristically shaggy and plush texture combined with a low knot density; indeed, the name 'Khersak' evokes "the little bear," hinting at this unique tactile quality. These rugs are also recognized for their notable durability. The rug's composition displays a medallion layout. At its heart lies a prominent, diamond-shaped medallion rendered in dark blue and filled with intricate designs. This central figure is set against a striking red background. Matching dark blue corner brackets punctuate the inner corners of the field, creating a distinct visual contrast. A detailed main border frames the entire piece, featuring elaborate patterns built from small, repeating motifs. The primary colors energizing the rug are vivid reds and oranges, strongly contrasted by the deep dark blue used in the medallion and corner details.
City Story
Bakhtiari tribe rugs from southwestern Iran are hand-knotted and vividly convey diverse narratives. Iconic designs include the Khesti (garden panel) with compartmentalized nature motifs, and medallion-with-corner layouts. Other symbolic patterns like Tree of Life, vase, geometric, and Herati (fish) motifs represent themes of eternity, abundance, interconnectedness, ancestral heritage, and good fortune. These rugs feature a durable wool pile, typically on a cotton foundation, and are made with the Turkish knot, ensuring strength and hard-wearing quality. Their weaving techniques reflect both nomadic and settled traditions. Bakhtiari rugs display a rich, varied, and bold color palette, often using natural dyes, with prominent reds, blues, greens, and yellows enhancing their distinctive character.
