The Design Story

raasta

Raasta
After spending five years in jail, Majid and Mudseer were overjoyed when their good behavior earned them a chance to visit their homes. This trip brought immense happiness and a renewed sense of purpose to their lives. For Majid, it meant reuniting with his four children, while Mudseer reflected on how the visit gave him a deeper perspective on life. Both vowed to work even harder in jail for the sake of their families, the ones they lived for. When they returned to the jail after their 20-day visit, they sat at the loom, their hearts and minds filled with memories of their loved ones and their village. Inspired by these emotions, they began weaving a rug they named “Raasta”—meaning “Paths.” Through this creation, they traced the paths of their villages: the streets where they used to buy gifts for their families, the spots where they met friends, and the familiar places that held pieces of their lives. With this rug, they portrayed their desire to go back to their home, a desire that was as sharp as their blurred future. Yet, for Majid, this longing has finally turned into reality, as he is now free and reunited with his family.
