The Design Story
azad chidiyaAzad ChidiyaAanchi Devi and her fellow weavers began this Manchaha by weaving small motifs of carrots, radishes, and bits of daily life. They hadn’t yet decided the direction of the rug when Aanchi noticed a sparrow sitting at her doorway. This inspired her to weave the sparrow, and it opened a conversation about freedom and how she, too, wished she could fly without limits. Married young, Aanchi stepped into responsibility before she was ready. Her life moved through many ups and downs, and she often felt confined. It was only after she began weaving and earning through her own skill that she felt a sense of peace return to her. In the centre of the rug, they created a landscape full of flowers, plants, and small farm places for the sparrow to rest and feed. Above it, they wove a wide sky in different shades of blue, giving the sparrow the space she longed for herself. When the rug was finished, they named it “Azad Chidiya”—the Free Sparrow.
