The Design Story

bhool bhoolaiya

Bhool Bhoolaiya
"Bhool Bhoolaiya" (Maze) is a treasure trove of memories, crafted by the mother-daughter duo, Koyali and Meenu. Known for their different styles, they usually balance each other in their creations. At first, they were unsure of what to weave. Sitting together, they began talking about their childhood and the games they once played. Slowly, the rug turned into a playground for both of them. Meenu brought in her love for Tetris. But instead of plain blocks, she wove different modern elements that fit into each other. She remembered how she loved the Find the Difference game, so she placed motifs like the ladder and chessboard in a way that viewers would have to search for them. On the right side, Koyali wove her own playground, which was the earth itself. She smiled as she said that children today only play on phones, while her own childhood was spent outdoors, hands full of mud and sand. She wove the patterns she once drew on the ground, a simple joy that now sits in contrast with Meenu’s modern forms. She also added triangles that connect to each other, inspired by a jigsaw puzzle she used to play. When the rug was complete, both of them looked at it with pride. Two different childhoods had come together, woven into one hand-knotted memory. This rug became a full-circle moment for them, as it was the last Manchaha they wove together before Meenu’s marriage. A beautiful coincidence to bring childhood alive in their last rug together.
