The Design Story
chocolate ka dabbaChocolate ka DabbaThis rug is a reminder that one motif can hold many stories, depending on who is looking at it. When Koyali and her daughter Meenu sat at the loom, they decided to fill the rug with diamond-shaped patterns. But as they worked, the same shapes began to take on different meanings. For the mother, each shape was a diamond—bright, precious, and strong, like the patterns she had known since childhood. For the daughter, the same motif looked like pieces of chocolate—sweet, playful, and modern, just like her way of seeing the world. When this rug was finished, there was a small argument between Koyali and her daughter, Meenu, about what to call it. Koyali saw the diamond-like shapes she had woven and wanted to name it after them. But Meenu, already so tempted imagining so many chocolates in her mind, wanted to name it after the sweet treats. Seeing the bright smile on her daughter’s face, the mother gave in, and together they named the rug “Chocolate ka Dabba,” which means “A Box of Chocolates.” The rug also carries the flowing leheriya pattern, a traditional touch that Koyali always loves to add. This shows the beautiful contrasts and harmony of two different generations coming together on one hand-knotted rug.
