The Design Story

rangeen rekhayein

Rangeen Rekhayein
Guddi Devi is shy by nature and often turns to her mother-in-law, Mindro Devi, for design inspiration, who also taught her the art of weaving. When Guddi asked Mindro Devi for ideas, she suggested drawing inspiration from saree patterns, and she instantly fell in love with the idea. Guddi selected her favourite leheriya (wavy) saree as inspiration. She began weaving with different colours of yarn, dividing the rug into diagonal sections. Each row featured a different pattern—small dots, tiny flowers, and titli (butterflies)—all inspired by her mother-in-law’s guidance. When the rug was completed, Guddi’s husband admired it and said, “Oh, this rug looks like your saree!” Hearing this filled Guddi with immense joy, and she named her creation “Rangeen Rekhayein,” meaning “Colourful Lines”.
