The Design Story
sargunSargunSurji speaks of never being able to weave in straight lines. Growing up amidst the sloping mountains and winding paths of the Aravalli hills, linearity was never a part of her landscape. The terrain she walked every day shaped her vision as an artist, and her loom follows the same rhythm. Though her compositions appear complex and layered, the stories they hold are quite simple yet charming. She weaves what she loves. Jewellery, chandeliers, trees and her humble “matka”, an earthen pot, returns again and again, grounding her work in everyday life. Surji’s rugs are also records of time. Whatever surrounds her during the making of a carpet finds its way into the weave. In this particular rug, a helicopter that passed above her loom during the weaving process becomes a part of this Manchaha. A winding path lined with tiny trees recalls the age-old banyan trees from her childhood memories. In the top right corner, a large beehive appears, while objects seem to hang mid-air like ornaments. In this way, Surji’s inner world merges seamlessly with the loom. Memory, moment, and material come together to form this Manchaha rug, which she named “Sargun”—a word that means one who possesses many qualities. True to its name, the rug becomes a reflection not only of Surji’s landscape and memories, but also of Surji herself.
