The Design Story

samay ki rekha

Samay Ki Rekha
This Manchaha carries the weight of time. The rug feels aged at first sight. Saroj did not plan the colors in blocks; she let them accumulate naturally, gathering in different parts of the rug the way time gathers memories. Some areas feel settled, others restless, like a landscape slowly changing its mind. At the bottom, everything is clear and grounded. These are the present realities of Saroj’s life: land, fields, daily tools, familiar forms. She lives surrounded by agriculture, close to the soil. Traditional ways of cooking, being, and living appear without explanation, they simply exist, as they do in her everyday life. As the eye moves upward, the rug begins to shift. Motifs distort, patterns glitch. It feels like stepping into another time, perhaps the future—where villages thin out, structures loosen, and what once felt permanent begins to dissolve. Nothing disappears completely, but nothing remains untouched. Saroj does not speak much about what she has woven. Instead, she leaves a question behind. How long will these ways remain? And when the future arrives, what will still be recognizable? Her thoughts are held, silently, in the knots of "Samay Ki Rekha" (The Line of Time).
