The Design Story

holika dahan

Holika Dahan
Dhafali Devi wove this Manchaha during the nearing days of the Holi festival. This rug follows the ritual as she knows it, step by step, the way it unfolds every year. She begins at the bottom with the moon, marking the night when people gather. Nearby, she places a juti symbolising the custom to remove footwear before approaching the sacred fire. At the centre of the rug is Holika Dahan that is celebrated on the eve of Holi. It signifies the victory of good over evil, faith over tyranny, and the burning of negativity. This sacred fire stands strong and alive, holding everyone’s attention. At the top, she weaves coconuts in green and brown, offerings used in the ritual. On the bottom right side, the sun appears as a reminder that the night will pass and morning will come. At the top, Dhafali Devi weaves paths taken by people as they walk in from different directions to witness the celebration together. This Manchaha is about coming together, following shared customs, and marking time through ritual. A moment when the village gathers, beliefs are renewed, and stories are carried forward, year after year.
