The Design Story
bakhtiari, iran (c.1950)Design Story
Embodying the rustic 'little bear' charm associated with Khersak weavings, this 1950 Bakhtiari rug originates from the skilled hands of Persian Lor or Qashqai artisans. Its characteristically shaggy, plush pile results from a notably low weave density, a hallmark distinguishing the Khersak type. The field presents a vibrant geometric landscape, grounded primarily in lively red and orange tones. A central design structure features interconnected diamond-shaped medallions rendered boldly in red. Within these primary forms nest smaller, intricate diamond motifs showcasing vibrant green, orange, and blue accents. Triangular elements, perhaps serving as stylized spandrels, flank this central configuration, adding geometric complexity. Framing the field, the main border displays a continuous, energetic zigzag motif executed in high-contrast orange and black. This striking pattern finds definition between narrow guard stripes rendered in a deep cola hue. The entire visually engaging composition is meticulously realized through traditional hand-knotting techniques using durable wool.
City Story
Bakhtiari tribe rugs from southwestern Iran are hand-knotted and vividly convey diverse narratives. Iconic designs include the Khesti (garden panel) with compartmentalized nature motifs, and medallion-with-corner layouts. Other symbolic patterns like Tree of Life, vase, geometric, and Herati (fish) motifs represent themes of eternity, abundance, interconnectedness, ancestral heritage, and good fortune. These rugs feature a durable wool pile, typically on a cotton foundation, and are made with the Turkish knot, ensuring strength and hard-wearing quality. Their weaving techniques reflect both nomadic and settled traditions. Bakhtiari rugs display a rich, varied, and bold color palette, often using natural dyes, with prominent reds, blues, greens, and yellows enhancing their distinctive character.
