The Design Story
ujalaUjalaMaya’s Manchaha, “Ujala” reflects how little things can light up one’s world and this became her core inspiration to weave this rug. To begin, Maya experimented with a design to warm up which she calls “ek chudh ek '' which is filling alternate colors one after the other. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, Maya's gaze fell upon her beautiful "Jangla" window, adorned with intricate iron rod designs and depicted it beautifully on the right side. During early winter, close to Diwali, Maya wove this rug. As children flew kites, they flew to Maya’s carpet too. She started thinking of preparations, lighting up diyas and candles on her Manchaha. She envisioned her festive attire, particularly her favorite chunari with shimmering stars. Bringing its intricate design to her rug, she made it a focal point of her creation. Sometimes, Maya relaxed under a tree. Adding a hand fan or Beejna motif on the left side, she depicted herself resting beneath the tree's cool shadow. As the festive season was around the corner, she started preparing sweets like delectable laddus, and those came on the rugs too. She shares how she used to get tired from all the festive preparations, and her children used to ask her to make Maggi - the instant noodles - so that she didn't have to spend more time in the kitchen. Those sweet memories of preparing and eating Maggi came on her manchaha, weaving a wavy Maggi-like pattern on the top. Maya's rug is filled with the warmth of love and sweetness of her life and little things that light up her world. She named her beautiful Manchaha as "Ujala," meaning light.
