The Design Story
pachrangi patangPachrangi PatangThis Manchaha took shape in the days leading up to Sankranti, Rajasthan’s beloved kite festival, a time that marks new beginnings. Kamala remembered climbing the hills near her village, carrying her kites to higher ground, wanting them to fly farther, freer, closer to the sky. Those memories surface in the rug. The long rising forms at the base tells the stories of the mountains she once climbed. From them emerges a large kite, and within it, smaller kites drift and overlap. Around them, cloud-like shapes form gentle steps, almost like a staircase to the sky. As the rug neared completion, something unexpected happened. Watching her weave day after day, Kamala’s father, an artisan himself, now retired, felt the old pull of the loom. Quietly, he joined her and added a "pachranga", a five-colored wavy pattern rooted in Rajasthan’s textile traditions. His hands returned to the craft, leaving behind a piece of himself in her work. For Kamala, this became the most meaningful part of the rug and she named it "Pachrangi Patang" (Five-Colored Kite).
