The Design Story
nanha munnaNanha MunnaDhaphu Devi and Kamali Devi are used to working on large looms, weaving carpets that stretch up to twelve feet! Expansive pieces that take months to complete. So when they began this four-foot Manchaha, it felt unusual, almost delicate in their hands. For the first time, the loom felt small, intimate, like working on a personal diary instead of a grand canvas. They brought a soft blue from a neighboring loom, and Dhaphu chose gentle, light golds and muted tones she loves. Kamali wove strings of matkas (earthen pots), inspired by the preparations at her sister’s home, where a wedding was around the corner. But midway, she had to leave for the celebrations. Dhaphu and another companion, Sunita quietly completed the rug. Working on this smaller piece with such care, Dhaphu grew deeply attached to it. To her, this carpet felt like a child. So they named it lovingly, “Nanha Munna” (Little One).
