The Design Story
pichwai artDating back to the 17th-century Nathdwara, Rajasthan, Pichwai Paintings were used as grand backdrops for the idol of Lord Shreenathji. Each piece is hand-painted on starched cotton and used to mark various festivals and seasons, such as Sharad Purnima, Annakut, or Janmashtami. Artists first sketch the scene with charcoal, then paint using natural pigments like indigo, saffron, and even pure gold leaf. The detailing is so fine, some parts are painted using a single squirrel hair brush. Common motifs like lotuses, peacocks, and cows aren’t just decorative—they carry deep spiritual meaning. Bold red or yellow borders are added to frame the divine energy. What makes Pichwai so special is the way it blends devotion, storytelling, and incredible craftsmanship into a single artwork. Today, these paintings are loved not just as sacred wall art but as stunning additions to modern interiors with rich cultural heritage.
