The Design Story
daldalDaldalNature has always been Dhafali Devi’s first teacher. She pays attention to the smallest shifts around her, the way trees change colour, the texture of soil after rain, the stillness of water. That quiet noticing often becomes the starting point of her designs. In this rug, she began with the date trees that grow abundantly in her village. Their tall, slender forms anchor the lower part of the weave. At the centre, she added large round stones, the kind you find in the middle of a river, where one can sit and pause. She first saw such a scene on television, and even through the screen, it gave her a sense of calm she had never forgotten. Towards the top, she wove a band of sand followed by a pool of water, framed by trees. This pattern is her interpretation of quicksand—beautiful to look at, yet quietly unpredictable. She wanted the rug to hold both things: the serenity of nature and the hidden uncertainty within it. This idea shaped the name she chose for the rug: “Daldal,” a landscape that is still, yet shifting beneath the surface.
