The Design Story
doongarDoongarWoven by Sumitra and her daughter Monika, this Manchaha rug captures the sweetness of their bond and the dreams they share. It began with simple box patterns during the hot Rajasthani summer, until a refreshing moment changed everything—Sumitra’s youngest daughter, Neetu, brought them a watermelon. Inspired by its colors, Neetu suggested they weave it into the rug. They did, and the design took a playful turn. As they wove together, Sumitra taught Monika the art of weaving—gently guiding her while giving her the freedom to create. In doing so, she revisited her own childhood memories. “Main pahaadon ki hoon,” she says proudly. She grew up in a house nestled in the Aravalli hills, surrounded by nature’s beauty. Those memories found life in the rug—like the date trees she used to climb as a child, now standing tall on both sides of the design. At the heart of the rug lies a scene close to Sumitra’s heart: a waterfall cascading down a mountain. Though she has only seen waterfalls on television, she dreams of witnessing one in real life. In this rug, she weaves that dream—hoping to bring it closer through every knot. More than a rug, this is a living artwork—a tapestry of love, nostalgia, and longing. A place where the past is remembered, the present is shared, and dreams are quietly sown.
