The Design Story
mishritMishritKanta and Durga, a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo, sit side by side at the loom, carrying forward a craft that has lived in their home for generations. More than 25 years ago, when Kanta came as a new bride, her husband’s sisters taught her weaving. As they left after their marriages, they asked Kamla to promise,“Never let this weaving work stop.” She kept that promise. Years later, she patiently taught her own daughters and her daughter-in-law, Durga — a Bachelor of Arts graduate with a sharp designer’s eye. Together, they discovered Manchaha. Kanta creates bold forms, while Durga adds intricate details. One designs, the other follows, their styles blending like a quiet conversation. Inspired by saree patterns, tiles, mathematical signs from children's books and everyday memories naming their Manchaha, "Mishrit" (Mixture). " Each knot is tied with care, every single loop placed with attention," says Durga. Through Manchaha, they found a friend in each other. They both have gained confidence. the feeling that we too have talent, we too can create something of our own brings joy to them. Together they are continuing the promise they once made, keeping the loom alive and the craft flowing from one generation to the next.
